Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I choose Shenu Volleyball Club?
SHENU VOLLEYBALL CLUB, INC is an organization established in 2008 to develop young girls, from diverse socioeconomic communities, providing opportunities to compete and succeed in life through volleyball.

What is the Club's stance on academics?
Shenu stresses academics thoughout the club season. Here are some examples: During finals, the practices are shortened or cancelled to provide extra study time for the athletes; during out of town trips players must bring schoolwork and are required to attend chaperoned study halls everyday; coaches frequently ask to see report cards and in some age groups the first half hour of practice is dedicated to homework. We even had a coach that is a math teacher that met a player 2 hours before a tournament once to assist her when she was struggling. The club places a high emphasis on academics, not just volleyball.

What credentials do your coaches have?
All our coaches and assistants are IMPACT, CAP I OR CAP II certified. Shenu coaches are also CPR certified. Our coaches have been and are the following: collegiate coaches, collegiate players, junior high coaches, high school coaches and officials.

How long is the club volleyball season?
The season is from November through end of April/beginning of May. For teams that are playing Festival or that make it to Nationals, the season extends until July.

When and where do you practice?
Practices are determined on gym availability. Most gym facilities are located in schools in the Scottsdale Unified School District. Practices are 2-3 times a week from 1½ hours to 3 hours.

How many athletes are on a team?
Most teams will not have fewer than ten 10 and we do our best not to exceed twelve 12 players.

Does everyone get to play?
SHENU VBC believes in giving everyone an opportunity in tournament play as long as each athlete fulfills their obligation to their team. Playing time is not automatic. Each player must earn his or her position. Coaches do their best to give everyone an opportunity to participate in the tournaments.

What is the difference between open team, championship team and club team?
Open/Championship teams have 4-5 tournaments in the season allowing those teams more "out" of state tournament play. Club teams have 7 tournaments in the season providing those teams with more "in" state tournament play.

When and where are AZ Region Tournaments tournaments?
Shenu partipates in the Arizona Region Tournament play. These Tournaments are held on Saturdays from 8AM -1PM and/or 3PM – 8PM. Some may be as far south as Tucson or as far north as Flagstaff. The Arizona Region will notify us when and where specific teams will play. Due to gym availability and cancellations, we may not be notified until the week of play. Changes can occur as late as the night before a given tournament.

Do we travel out of state for games?
13 and under teams are non-traveling. 14-1, 16-1 & 18 teams are scheduled to travel.

Can I go to the out of state tournaments with my child?
Yes! We encourage parental support at all tournaments. Parents are responsible for their own travel arrangements, accommodations and fees. All athletes will travel as a team and stay together as a team.

What do my Club Dues go towards?
Club Dues include insurance coverage, uniforms, Arizona Region tournament fees and SHENU VBC membership fees. We are solely funded by your monthly payments. Without your monthly payments, SHENU VBC would not run successfully.

What is my Commitment fee of $400 for?
The commitment fee you pay at tryouts is a deposit that secures your child's position on the team. It is non-refundable.

What other cost will there be?
USAV membership, the expense for you and your athlete to attend instate and out-of-state tournaments.

Do you have fundraising opportunities for my athlete to help pay for the fees?
Yes, we have great fundraising opportunities. We offer 3-4 club organized fund-raisers each season.

When are payments due?
Payments are due on the first of every month. If postmarked after the 8th a $20.00 late fee will apply. Do not bring payment to practices.

Where do I send my payment?
Please send all payments to:
Shenu Volleyball Club
P.O. Box 91098
Phoenix, Arizona 85066

What are my payment options?
We gladly accept cash, check or Money order. We offer a 5% discount for payment in full received by Dec. 1st, 2010.
Please see our Documents page / 2011 Season Fees for payment info.

Who do I talk to if a concern arises with my child or on my child's team?
If concerns arise, please start with your daughter's coach. Please make an apointment when you, your player and coach can discuss your concerts together. Durring tournaments and practice is not an appropriate time. If the problem is not resolved, you may address your concerns with the director.
